Although DarkFall allows casters to wear heavy armor, characters that do are penalized in the following ways.
1. Greater chances of miscasting (you waste your time and mana on a spell that misfires)
2. Your magic will have less output when healing or damaging others. Like many other MMOs, DarkFall has a system of magic which is broken into distinct schools, or spell types.
Similar to Everquest, repeatedly casting spells of a school of magic will benefit your proficiency within that school of magic. Unlike other MMOs, DarkFall has different advantages for magical proficiency.
Advantages: 1. Faster casting times 2. Enhanced damage 3. Ability to hit additional targets
The spells which you cast the most in Darkfall will determine your ability to specialize within several available schools of magic. The schools which you do not choose will have a limited amount of mastery available to your character. Schools of magic which are diametric opposites, e.g. Fire vs Water, Earth vs Air, may not be chosen for dual specialization. You must choose one or the other.
Advanced spells consume regents when being cast. This requires spell casters to carry more supplies into combat than other classes, and increases their dependency on trips to town.
If considering between the path of being an archer or a magician, note that arrows move more quickly than spells and are harder to spot. (This makes them harder to avoid.) Spells in DarkFall need to travel and touch their target to do damage. Additionally, spell power is limited. I.e. you may be able to fire arrows indefinitely, but casters need to take a rest and are not as useful as long term damage dealers.
